Therapy for Veterans & Active-Duty Service Members
You don't need to explain military life to me. I've lived it. And I've spent over 13 years helping veterans and service members find their way through the aftermath of it.
You Served. This Is What Comes After.
Military service asks things of you that civilians don't fully understand — and often can't. The hypervigilance that kept you alive downrange. The moral weight of decisions made under impossible pressure. The identity that came with the uniform, and the strange disorientation of life without it. The relationships that didn't survive the distance, or the version of you that came home.
These aren't weaknesses. They're the natural consequences of extraordinary service. And they respond to the right kind of help.
I'm Phil Hobson, a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist based in Meridian, Idaho. I served in the military before becoming a therapist, which means I bring something to this work that can't be learned in a classroom — an understanding of the culture, the code, and what it actually costs to serve. You won't spend our first sessions explaining your world to me. We can get straight to the work.
What I Treat
I specialize in the issues that veterans and active-duty service members most commonly carry:
Combat-related PTSD and trauma
Military sexual trauma (MST)
Moral injury — the weight of what you did, witnessed, or failed to prevent
Substance abuse and its relationship to trauma
Depression, anxiety, and emotional numbness
Survivor's guilt
Difficulties with relationships, anger, and intimacy after service
Transition challenges — from military to civilian life, or between deployments
Identity and purpose struggles post-service
How We Work
I use evidence-based approaches that have been extensively researched with military populations:
EMDR — Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing
EMDR was developed specifically for trauma and has become one of the most well-validated treatments for combat-related PTSD available. It works by helping your brain
process memories that have gotten stuck — memories that still feel present, threatening, and real even though they belong to the past. One of the things veterans often find most meaningful about EMDR: you don't have to talk through the trauma in detail for it to work.
Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT)
CPT is a structured 12-session treatment designed to address the beliefs that trauma leaves behind — things like I should have done more, It was my fault, or I can never be safe again. It's one of the VA's primary recommended treatments for PTSD and has a strong track record with veterans. We work through these beliefs systematically and replace them with something more accurate and livable.
Internal Family Systems (IFS)
IFS helps you understand and work with the different parts of yourself — the part that stays on guard, the part that shuts everything down, the part that's still carrying guilt from years ago. Rather than fighting those parts, IFS helps you develop a genuine relationship with them. Veterans often find this model resonates deeply, because it respects the reasons those parts exist.
A Note on Confidentiality
I understand that confidentiality concerns are real for many veterans — particularly around security clearances, career implications, and how mental health records might be used. Private therapy with me is not connected to the VA, the DoD, or your chain of command. What you share stays between us, with only the narrow legal exceptions that apply to all licensed therapists. I'm happy to talk through any concerns you have about this before we begin.
You Don't Have to Do This Through the VA
The VA provides vital services, and I respect the work done there. But the VA isn't the right fit for everyone — waitlists can be long, the setting feels clinical to some, and many veterans simply prefer the privacy and flexibility of a private practice. I offer both in-person sessions in Meridian and telehealth sessions for those who prefer to meet remotely.
I also have an affiliation with The Headstrong Project, a nonprofit that provides free trauma-focused therapy for eligible veterans. CLICK THE HEADSTRONG PROJECT TAB AT THE TOP OF THIS PAGE FOR MORE INFORMATION ABOUT THIS PROGRAM. If cost is a concern, please ask me about this program when we speak.
